Toshiba launches software to control PCs through Mobiles

Talk about mobiles and you are suddenly reminded of tiny screens with hard to use keypads. They can now handle more than just phone calls. We can listen to music, surf the Internet and even watch movies on them. Now, Toshiba has added another extension to this wide variety of functions a mobile can provide you. Talk about remote accessibility, new software technology from the tech giant let users operates their Computers through their mobile phones!

They call the software Ubiquitous Viewer and they would initially be making it available to corporate users in Japan in collaboration with one of the mobile networks. The software is installed on both the Mobile device and the targeted computer. It than recreates the desktop of the client on the Mobile’s screen for accessibility through it.

Toshiba’s representative claimed that clients could use this technology to read their mail and edit documents on the targeted machine. The software is also capable of turning on machines supporting the quite popular Wake-on-LAN function. It turns computer on when traffic is targeted at the machine through the network.

About the screen size limitations of the mobile device, Toshiba has followed a novel approach. The software captures a portion of the actual desktop and displays it on the mobile. The compression ratio for data transfer is as high as 97% to manage the accessibility of the desktop on the mobile device. The product is currently aimed at the corporate users by the Toshiba Corp. Prices and plans for international launch is still not disclosed.

This is B-O-L-O-G-N-A. What is the big deal? VNC for pocket PC has been around for a long time, and my company Airstream Wireless developed SSHTelnet for the RIM Blackberry’s. We developed it years ago. This is really no big deal, and who wants to view a 1024×768 screen on your cell phone? The only thing Admins really want to do is enter important commands to restart a service or reboot a machine. And for that all you need it Telnet or SSH. This is what we call stupid hype. Toshiba, go back to developing super small hard drives and leave the remote control to someone else.
