Wikipedia cleared in a lawsuit in France

Wikipedia has been cleared in a lawsuit which was originally filed in France. The Judge ruled that the free online open source encyclopedia cannot be held responsible for what web users write on it.

The Wikipedia was sued by three French nationals over an article on the service which said that they were gay activists.

The ruling quoted the 2004 French law which limits the web service’s liability over content posted by its users.

Judge Emmanuel Binoche further said in the ruling: “Web site hosts cannot be liable under civil law because of information stored on them if they do not in fact know of their illicit nature.”
