Sony’s PSP is a best seller

The latest news according to which a senior Sony representative admitted that Apple has thrashed them with iPod is not exactly the end of everything. They might have missed on to the digital music market, but they rule the gaming devices genre. PlayStation 2 is a massive success while PlayStation 3 is in the making already. Their recent offering PSP (PlayStation Portable) again has become a bestseller of its own!

Sony said yesterday that they have till now shipped around 8lakh units of the PSP in the market. However, they are not exactly impressed by these figures as their chief said that the market is much larger than this and the number should increase as the supplies match the demand. They expect to get this number raised to 3 million units by the end of March.

The number is also not realistic considering European and American market is yet to receive this high profile gadget. Sony should be supplying these huge markets in the month of March. Than we should be seeing some real overwhelming numbers. Sony has also taken another important step in the recent days.

They have applied to make their PSP Storage medium Universal Media Disc (UMD) a universal standard. This should let other manufacturers take advantage of this amazingly small disc with high capacity. The 2.4-inch big medium holds around 1.8GB data and Sony plans to offer music and movies on this for the PSP. This would further increase the mass-appeal of the gadget.

There are also rumors of Sony adding another module to the PSP to make it function like a mobile phone to put it in direct competition with Nokia N-Gage. That would really be cool! With Apple jumping in the segment with their collaboration with Motorola, Sony would get another chance to settle it against Apple!

Basing that statement on what, Fanboy? The DS’s inferior graphical ability, or the general cheesiness of its design? Had you said the DS was more innovative, or had potential for better games, we might have had something to discuss, but to toss out a blanket statement like you did just makes you look like a moron. Go back to your cave.

the DS will not be able to compete with the new psp, the psp has so many new feature, and is just as much as the ds, over all, the psp will be the best.

I resent people who put opinion over fact. “PSP will be the best.” How arrogant. The DS has greater potential than the PSP. Opinion? HA. DS will soon have a media adapter to rival PSP’s media features. The DS has better control. Opinion? HA. You won’t see many first person shooters on PSP, Sony messed up the analog stick positioning, but the DS, as proven with Metroid, will see many (such as Goldeneye :)). The DS already has a nearly 1 million sales ahead of PSP, so to say DS is out of race, that’s just foolish.

The nintendo ds is far from “out” of the competition. I hate the people who judge the product by the company who made the product. The nintendo ds is the more powerful handheld console coming out on the market. Iam both a nintendo and a sony fan so my statement is not biased. So people, if you want to “slag” off nintendo because u think there crap, then how about shutting up n wait n c. keep your biased opinions to yourself! Oh n GameGuy is right, the nintendo 64 kicked ass, with good games like goldeneye. It was a huge game then and will be again. So go back to playin wit ur rattle!

upon spending the last 2 hours looking over BOTH handheld systems i beleive that the Nintendo DS is aimed more at the people who want something like a Gameboy, While The PSP seems to be more oriented towards an older group. As for which is better, i beleive that the PSP will be better overall in that it is a better peice of technology, some down sides are the fact that you need a memory stick to save, and that the disc’s could be damaged just as easy as any other CD. The main decider of which of these 2 handhelds will truly be better rests souly on the games produced, and how people feel about the games they play, But as for people saying games like golden eye rock and will rock again… just go pick up your N64 and play it, my guess is that you will get tired of it fairly fast, unless these remade games are tweeked i think they could be a big flop

i agree with mikey_boy, the ds has got potential, but its just whether nintendo actually make use of the innovative design. i do however feel that in the short time of the production of games for the ds will be shamefull to say, and the game life of certain games could be extremely short – more of a novelty rather than innovation! the PSP on the other hand will completely redesign the handheld market making it a more universal area to buy into. the fact that it is not only a gaming console, but plays movies, and music is an extremely useful product. the idea is not new, but somehow no-one beforehand has ACTUALLY produced it, SO STUPID… i feel the PSP will outsell any other handheld so far, maybe not the original grey nintendo gameboy, but will be close. obviously the name and the history behind sony helps, ALOT, but sonys ingenious design and sculpture of this piece make it a piece of art, not only in terms of gaming, but to the eye aswell! Now the question is just, when? when is it arriving to europe, could amazon.com contacts be correct with a release date of april? maybe, but do not be certain with these and wait for the word from the boss, Sony.

The nintendo DS has great potential. I have one. It is UNBELIVABLY COOL.It has: 1. Two screens, 2. Touch screen (so sensitive you can blow on it!), 3. Great speakers, 4. Microphone, 5. Pictochat, 6. Wireless play, 7. Downlowd play, 8. Backwards compatibility, 9. Great graphics. Your “great” PsP does not have 1,2,(3?),4,5,and 8. And gues what! The DS is CHEAPER too! I have done reaserch. I know things. So come back with a real comeback for that! (by real I meansomething more than “shut up”)

Yeh, your right about what the DS DOES have, but i am still unconvinced about the DS beating the PSP. The screen on the PSP, yeh only 1 but who cares, it has FULL COLOUR display thats a huge 16.77 million colours, when BOTH the screens put together on the DS have only 620,000 colours! The PSP screen is HUGE at 480 x 272 pixels resolution, when the screens on the DS are only 256 x 192 pixels resolution! and to be honest, there is no point in going on, it would just be wasting my breath (or hand muscles…) on trying to explain to some DS obsessed owner that they have surely wasted their money on buying an inferior machine that will become out-dated in just a months time. Im sorry mate, but get used to it and look at it from an outsiders view, the PSP is the new IPod, and you don’t hear much about the DS apart from in shops where they’r trying to flog the stock they have before the PSP rolls into town when they won’t sell ANY DS consoles from then on. I hope this satisfies more than a ’shut up’ answer that you didnt want. Enjoy your DS. For now…

Having read throught heentir list of comments, its clear that people are undecided about the DS or PSP. I had a DS from launch day and I thought it was great, playng Mario 64 again. i got some dodgy racing game and the tigerwoods game. Both were crap. The touch screen is a good thing, but its a novalty that will not revolutionize game play. The machine looks cheap and plastic. The PSP looks amazing, someone said the new IPOD. I think they are right. Adults playing the DS lok stupid, whereas the PSP mantains a little dignaty. The luanch gaes for the DS were rubbish, it was obvious they rushed the launch to get ahead of the PSP. I returned ny DS after 3 weeks and traded it for a down payment on the PSP and a handfull of good games. I am now looking forwad to that 12 flight, as soon as I get a spare batery that is!

Well done for the trade in, probably the best decision you have made in a while. The games also do seem rather to have a short lifespan. They are good for a laugh, then the next minute you feel yourself looking around for something else to do. The games on the psp are just completely different with better lifespan and some are just genuinely good remakes of older classic games, and they still work as an excellent game. Anyhow, im still staying with the psp and none of these DS geeks, who praise it till they die, will ever change my decision.

Well I am currently staying in the US so I am picking mine up a week today. Sorry to rub it in mate, but I can’t wait. I have some long flights to take the week after and for once I am actually looking forward to them. Picking up wipeout and Tiger Woods, not sure what my 3rd game will be yet. I am stil waiting to see the reviews. I never had the balls to take the DS out in public, which kind of defeats the object of a handheld system. At least with the PSP I won’t look like a child.

Ds has potential, I agre, but once the novelty of the touch / second screen wears off what do yo have left? A machince that developers have to spend more time and money developing games to cope and use the two screens well, or develop games soley for the DS that means a limited market. All the games I played on the DS would be just as good with one screen and an anolouge controller. Wow a full map on the bottem screen, great! Controlling MArio 64 with the bottem screen takes a load of practice and using the D pad, defeats the purpose of the game. I give it a another 6 months shelf life. Well done Nintendo for trying something new and having the balls to release it, but its not targeted a specific market. Older people want to relive golden eye and Mario 64 etc, but why not just bring out a greatest hits disc for the gamecube, plus adults gamers look stupid with the DS. Younger gamers will loose paitents with the lack of good games so I personall feel the machine is doomed. Long live the PSP

Well done. another well structured and thought out comment. You see there are some sensible arguments in this discussion, but just saying “DS rules blah, blah blah,” does not add anything. Most people have admitted that the DS is an interesting piece of hardware, but long term it will not suceed as it does not appeal to a mass amrket. Sony supply a good product that not only looks the part but delivers a wide mix of games and services to a mass market. They play it safe and it works for them. Nintendo took a risk with the Ds experiemnt, and they will learnt hat touch screen control is not the way forward. If it was you would think they would use it for the new gamecube “revolution” hardware they are producing. They have gone on record as saying it will not feature touch screen technology. Sony played around with the eye toy, which had a limited appeal, it was fun but only for a few weeks. Companies have tried new ways of controlling hte game, but it always comes back to the same thing, more buttons on a control pad. We the mass market want simple things, more powerfull machines, bigger games, better grpahics but most importantly interesting and thoughfull games, such as ICO, REZ etc, but we still want the standard fun filing moments from GTA, GT4 etc. At the end of the day its all about personal choice, and I feel that the majority of people will choose the PSP. (obvioulsy this is all jst my opinion, but it is little more thought out than the majority of the DS lovers simply saying, DS rules!)

Apparently Sony are using their eye-toy camera somehow in the new PS3 form, dunno how or why for tht fact, but for video conferencing and more online gaming. i read a review about it somewhere and that they are goin to ‘relaunch’ it in a new way, god knows how, it didnt ‘float my boat’ but ye, whatever they think will work… lets hope it doent turn into a Nintendo DS situation with the touchscreen… hehe. Ye, back to the PSP… just amazing but yeh, will wait for the release to really see ‘cus thts just my opinion and i think it will be true cus i thort the DS was gunna be crap and i do believe it is. Anyone disagree?? goooood. So ye, anyone know the release date for the PSP in UK then? cheers.

Got my PSP at the weekend. I hae to say, in my opinion, it kicks the DS’s ass. I have already played it more in two days than I played y DS for 2 weeks. Managed to get a free copy of Spider man 2 wth it. Was amazing to see how well it played the film. I have no plans to buy any films on UMD, just to watch on PSP, but it really shows off the capabilites of the system. THe games I got are great, Wipe out, Tiger Woods and Luminies. Loving every minute of my PSP. I got a $20 kit with it that had a hard case for the machine and came with disc holders, and 4 screen guards. I would serioulsy reccomend to anyone to get some screen gaurds. PLastic film to make save it from scratches. The screen is so good that you don’t want anything to ruin it. Not tried music or photos yet. I don’t think many people will be dissapointed witht he system. Yes its a littel pricey, but its so worth it.

I collect video games and systems as a hobby so of course I have to put in my two cents. I own both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. After playing games on both for the last two weeks I have to say the DS is going to be sealed in a box and put on display with the other out dated systems. I can’t bring myself to play the DS with the two microscopic screens after playing the PSP all day at work with it’s crystal clear screen. I have been a fan of the Nintendo since 1986 when my little brother and I opened our first NES. Since then I have bought and tested every gaming system released. To this day I have over 50 different systems and well over 2,000 games for those systems. To state my opinion the PSP is the best Hand Held system to be released as of yet. The DS when first released was cool because it was different, but the novelty has worn of, and the touch screen is starting to make me mad. As of now, I am waiting for Microsoft to jump on the hand held band wagon and release a system of their own. Heck, Maybe they will use the UMDs for the games as well.

Why UMD? Fine that it’s got a protective case and is small… but it holds a mediocre 1.8gb on the brink of HD pervasiveness. While I don’t hold Sony to high standards anymore, you think they could at lease release a universal (proprietary) disc that is has some compelling edge to it. Even the protective case has a gaping hole in it; at least they could have salvaged the sliding door from their old MD design.

Existing mini-DVD’s hold 1.47gb, dual-layer mini-DVD’s hold 2.8gb and you can imagine sizes for upcoming mini/hdDVD’s will probably quadruple that.

Fortunately they made the screw-up of all time and only released it on it’s own player (and a game machine at that, albeit a cool one) and released with no recordable media (and no intention of releasing one). Remember artists used to release MD’s for awhile… now they’re just a novelty… and no wonder since they suffered from average storage (no better than CD’s) and Sony’s proprietary (inferior) ATRAC codecs. Even then MD units were made by multiple manufacturers and were recordable and still failed.

At least with today’s 5.1/DTS dvd-audio discs they are 10x better than audio CD’s, and you’re even seeing support for them in cars off the manufacturing line. It too may not last long, but only b/c the new hd standard will make it better. At least newer players will still support them.

Plus, if Nintendo or someday MS releases their own portable game-player with media capability, they’d never pay royalties to Sony for UMD or be able to get movie distribution for yet another format… that leaves a rather obvious choice.

Hollywood/Sony needs to take a page from the old MD story… in the end the PSP will be a novelty media player and UMD will be the MemoryStick of optical media.

i have a ds. and of course i have all the old game boys and play stations too.
i think ds is a really good handheld. the graphics can be better, but the top games must show what kind of graphic ds can or not can. special at the ds is there gameplaying. the touchscreen is very nice. look for example for the kirby video, there you see what the new ds gameplay can be. it´s of course more innovative then psp. at the other side, psp is a multimedia-handheld with many nice features too. i dont have it, but i think the graphik is better then the ds. but not the gameplay. not the one or the oter one is the better handheld. ds and psp are great handhelds. the games have to show us, which one is the better one. for me, a better gameplay is more, then better graphics. thats why i think, ds is more innovative. if graphic-power is all you need, then buy you the newest AMD or INTEL. for very nice games, with a lot of innovative gameplay, buy you a ds :)

the lst post makes a good point about sony with md, as well as otehr media producers tryed at one point just to use mini cd’s to releas singles that also flopped… now another history olesson for you guys… remember the game gear? a superior system to the game boy in every way and yet the mono crome screan out sold out bid and out lasted the game gear. i think if you watch even though the ds is not as pritty or as high tech as the new psp it does have some things to offer. some of whitch have been staited already. as for the psp i will buy one of them because the game line up appeals to me, i am an MGS fan and have been from the good old days of the original releas of the NES days. tobad for nintendo losing that market. not to mention i like sports games and sony has the hockey offering right out the gate nintendo has nothing that i can see in the forseable future. in the end i hope for nintendo that this is not another vertual boy.. but i do think that nintendo will be around for along time to come in the hadn held world because they havent gone any where after 6 generations of the game boy. i just hope that the psp doesnt go the way of the game gear.

Psp has the gfx power, the screen, and the extra capabilites. The Ds has the innovative design, the backwards compabitility to a huge library of gb games, and decent gfx. Honestly I applaud sonys attempts in making the “ultimate secure media format”, but Im not to sure of 2 things. A) if the security will last, modders and crackers are a persistant people. And B) If adding one more media format to the market is a good idea. In order to watch movies you have to buy a umd version? *sigh* and I had hoped to watch my current collection on a psp.

Or maybe i jus made it up, but it cud be done. anyway i thought this was a psp forum, so if the ds is so good, why r the ppl who like it searchin for sites like this? – fun life they leads me thinks.
