ok.
breathe deeply.
there are irrational thinkers amongst us
who do not understand how science works,
& that in science, evidence is everything.

Evidence is everything.

Word: your assertion, conjecture, argument
is worth less without evidence.

E.g., Grog & Grogette were walking
on the Serengeti 70k yrs ago.

From a distant hillside,
grogette notices that large cats
are stalking Grog.

Grogette forms a hypothesis
(an empirically *testible* answer to a question):
the large cats are not playful kittens & will eat grog.

The hypothesis is testable.

Evidence: the lions pounced on Grog
& ripped out his internal organs,
then feasted on his loins.

Tens of thousands of years later,
Grogette's great, great,great...great
grandchildren became scientists
who insist that, for any hypothesis,
evidence is everything.

Evidence is everything.

"...records show that for the past 50 years or so, the warming trend has sped up -- due, researchers said, to the atmospheric burden of greenhouse gases produced by everything industrial, from power plants burning fossil fuels to gas-guzzling cars -- and the effects are clear.

"We were stunned by the similarities between the observations that have been recorded at sea worldwide and the models that climatologists made," said Tim Barnett of the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "The debate is over, at least for rational people. And for those who insist that the uncertainties remain too great, their argument is no longer tenable. We've nailed it."

Climatologist Wally Broeker once said,
"the climate system is a capricious beast,
& we are poking at it with a sharp stick."

Well well. It is always interesting to me to see that the psedo-religious are out surfing the net in search of science to bash. Please please you zealots just stay the heck in whatever hole you crawl out of. Asking questions, proposing theories (some of them wrong and some of them right) are what have allowed humanity to prosper. Not belief in some all seeing judgemental being up in the clouds. If you don't like science then talk of all of your clothes stop taking any medicine quit your jobs sell all of you belongings and sit in a room and pray all day. Then your god can provide for you. One more thing before you take the time to bash science for its "theories" remember scientific theories are based on evidence and experimentation. Your beliefs are based on what some guy tells you in a building every Sunday and what you read in a book that has been reedited and retranslated a hundred times over. Do you remember the game telephone? Think about it.

Not at all surprising!
WE are already seeing a large number of extinction caused by us through habitat destruction. Since it happens slowly in terms of our life it doesnt seem to strike us.
In geological terms the history of the human species is like an instant!

The second I saw this headline, I wondered how long it would take the agents of the Diminishment to swoop in and denounce it as 'empirical, scientific, objective, secular, humanist, rational', the worst that an educated and knowledgable civilization could produce.

It did not take long, I see. :)

well.. when life on earth is dependent not just on earth but Mainly on SUN and balance in this universe.. how can we blame EARTH for mass extinction . . earth itself i dont think is capable of wiping of its entire bilogical life.. we know how sun emits strong radiation in pulses can it be a reason.. c'se to destroy life on land and water.. i see the culprit is some sort of radiation.. ,we also need to Understand the SUN in depth .. well.. but finally i dont believe volcanos can trigger such extinction .. not even meteorite( i never accepted the meteorite theory which caused death of dinosaurs too)

Does it realy matter in the big picture. the universe is un folding ever changing a star is born every split of a sceond a star dies every split of a second. Our actual history is now. We fret in fear as we rush through space on a revolving speck of dust. What could happen to us next? Anything and Everything are resonable quesses from me
May l suggest we put our intilligence and resources to task of things we really need to care aboutand what we actually can do.
Like protect, nuture and care for everything that brings life to the spinning speck of dust we call earth.

It makes sense that we could have experienced mass extinctions from volcanic activity and global warming, but that would also lead us to believe that the earth can/will/did repair its own atmosphere over the course of time (otherwise we wouldn't be here) and we shouldn't put so much effort and money into protecting it now (e.p.a). So, find some cfc containing products, light a joint and have a party, because there is nothing we can do to prevent "the end of the world".. except maybe pray to god, and we saw how far that got the Tsunami Victims. Not to sound cold, but fundamental Islamic's, like the inhabitants of Thailand, are far more religious and dedicated to their beliefs than the average modern American, and they died just the same as everyone else. Enjoy your life, because you only get one shot, and then you rot in a box like everyone else.
