Micron Technology launches RealSSD family of storage devices
Micron Technology has announced their entry into the solid state drive marketplace with the launch of their RealSSD family of storage devices.
They are offering ATA II-enabled solid state drives in 32GB and 64GB capacities. These are available in 1.8-in. and 2.5-in. sizes.
They are currently available in sample quantities though the company would begin mass manufacturing starting next year.
The company added that these drives require less than 2 watts of power during active mode and are about 50% lighter than hard disk drives of similar capacities.
Dean Klein, company’s vice president of memory system development said in a statement: “Technology is going to make [these drives] real. The cost of the NAND components will be a large determining factor in terms of acceptance. Even if we could bring speed of light performance to these devices, there’s a lot of applications that still won’t take them because the cost is too high or the density isn’t high enough.”
