Now Google it for TV Programs
The next big thing is out from the stables of the world’s most loved web search engine. Google has moved on from their desktop searching to conquer the video searching market. Their new service is called Google Video Beta and it searches primarily TV programs online. Yahoo! on their part has responded with their own Video Search, which at this moment covers the videos on the web. The market is pretty young with few players trying to lure visitors.
The little known desktop searching utility Blinkx have already integrated Blinkx.tv with their offering, which shows the users related video clippings from the web on the content user is working on. Overall, the services are quite raw with what they offer. There are few search results and in fact, Google’s own Video Search just displays related information to the videos (like telecast time and channel for the TV Series) instead of the videos themselves.
Google at the moment supports ABC, Fox News, PBS, and C-SPAN. However, they plan to keep on adding more channels, as the official word from the company is that they want to index all the TV programs. They use closed captioning text of the indexed programs to find for searched for keywords. Their video search is accessible from here. Yahoo! on the other hand is more actively indexing the videos on the web. They also let publishers submit their content for indexing and have links to actual videos. Yahoo! Video Search is available from here.
The point still remains on how Google plans to earn money from this deal. Currently Google is not displaying content relevant ads on the result pages of the Video Searches. The market would indeed grow with the major players entering the arena.
