1 million Apple iPhones might have been unlocked
Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. has stated that as per their estimates people around the world unlocked as many as 1 million Apple iPhones to make them run on third party mobile networks.
This could mean that more than a quarter of all iPhones sold in the market are probably running on unauthorized networks.
Apple sells the iPhone in collaboration with mobile service providers. These devices are sold in a locked state which prevents them from running on other networks.
Solutions have been available online enabling the user to break this lock to make the device work on rival networks.
Market analyst Toni Sacconaghi said in a statement: βThe prevalence of unlocked iPhones presents a significant strategic dilemma to Apple.β
Apple could lose a lot of sales if it manages to prevent these unlocking procedures completely. Apple has declined to comment on this report.
