Napster going mega with To Go launch

As reported earlier, the original granddaddy of online music sharing Napster is launching its new service nicknamed ‘TO GO’ which would let subscribers download unlimited number of songs and even play them on supported digital music players along with their PCs for a fee. Napster is going mega with the launch of the service particularly targeted at the world’s most popular digital music store Apple’s iTunes.

This Sunday, Napster would be spending a chunk of their huge USD 30 million advertisement budget for the scheduled launch to advertise Napster To Go service during the famous Super Bowl commercials. The advertisement planned by Napster is rumored to be poking fun at Apple’s for sale songs store iTunes.

Apple controls majority of the online music sales through their iTunes store, which is well supported with their hugely popular iPod music player. And with recent launch of the cheap 99 dollar iPod Shuffle, the popularity is expected to grow even further. However, Napster has the added advantage of support from a large variety of music players, which include devices from Creative, Gateway, iRiver, Rio and Samsung. In addition, To Go service would give users access to a large number of songs for rentals for a small fee.

The Superbowl makes it sound legit. I use Yahoo in its latest incarnation. Has Napster gone legit, too? :) :) :)
