Intel to soon launch 600-series Pentium 4

Intel’s reputation has taken a hit in the recent days. AMD released faster and cheaper processors took initiative in the 64-bit processor launch. More recently, three tech giants IBM, Toshiba, and Sony launched a chip codenamed ‘Cell’ they claim has been developed from scratch and can be scaled to power devices ranging from gaming machines to super computers.

Intel is now striking back. Their new range of microprocessors would soon be available in the form of the new 600-series Pentium 4s. These chips have the capabilities to handle larger chunks of data than most of today’s chips. These will also be the first processors from the tech giant that support a technology called 64-bit memory addressability. Current generation Intel processors process data in 32-bit chunks.

This new technology would result in faster processors with improved performance in demanding jobs like managing large database program or working in video editing applications. Intel would hence have the punch to counter AMD’s 64-Bit processors in the market.

Critics say that Intel still has the potential and with their long history of successful processors based on x86 platform, it would not be soon that some other technology would overtake them in the primary market of desktop and business machines.

For any new technology to become successful, it would have to provide support for current and past generation applications without compromising on performance and price of the final product. That might lead to the continues domination of Intel in the processor market in the near future.
