EU wants broadband penetration of 30% in the region by 2010
The European Commission has said that they are setting themselves a target to achieve 30 percent broadband internet penetration in the region in the next 2 years. It is around 20% at the moment.
EU said that this is essential to drive economic growth in the region.
Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding said in a statement: “These EU countries, together with the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg and France, all had broadband penetration rates higher than the United States in July 2007.”
Reding added: “However, the job is not yet done. Competition is limited for access to the fixed network which is still provided to 86.5 percent of customers over the incumbent’s infrastructure.”
