Warner Music Group wants ISP Tax for music download
Warner Music Group is said to be working on plans to get the ISPs in the US market to charge a small fee from every subscriber to get unlimited access to music online.
The music company is said to have hired the services of Jim Griffin to head this initiative.
Jim Griffin was quoted as saying in an interview: “Today, it has become purely voluntary to pay for music. If I tell you to go listen to this band, you could pay, or you might not. It’s pretty much up to you. So the music business has become a big tip jar.”
He added that they estimate this tax to generate revenues worth $20 billion annually. This money could then be distributed between artists and copyright holders.
He said: “Ideally, music will feel free. Even if you pay a flat fee for it, at the moment you use it there are not financial considerations. It’s already been paid for.”
