Microsoft to make a gala re-entry in Mobile Phone market
Not satisfied with its domination in the Desktop Operating System and Internet Browser market, Microsoft is next targeting the Mobile Phone market with its latest plans. They would be making their biggest attempt to gain a major share in the market today to get people to use Microsoft developed Mobile Phones.
They have collaborated this time with the world’s largest contract maker of handsets Flextronics. Their initial plans are to develop a low cost mobile phone for masses codenamed Peabody. This would be the latest attempt by the software giant to get into the mobile market as they have till now only gained a miniscule share of the market with their high priced models.
Microsoft’s handsets are already sold by around 67 networks in 48 countries and they are hopeful that this new initiative would prove to be more attractive towards the mobile network operators and consumers. Their new planned offering Peabody would come with the latest Windows software, Bluetooth, and a camera installed. Basically, it would be a low cost scaled down version of their bigger product, the SPV.
Microsoft’s earlier attempts at the same market fell through two years ago when their partner at that time Sendo accused them of sharing confidential technical information with far-eastern manufacturers and pulled out of the deal. Hopefully, this time Microsoft would not suffer similar consequences with their product launch.

It’s not bad enough that my computer dosen’t work correctly,
filled with security bugs and vunerable to viruses.
Now Redmond wants to make sure I don’t get my phone calls either.
Will these new phones have the ever wonderfull Blue Screen Of Death we are all so used to? Wont it be fun a phone that has numerous advertising popups and built in spireware that can monitor everything we do. I think microsoft should devote time to developing a solid operating system and take some lessons from the linux community.

No kidding. Why didn’t the DOJ break up this monstrosity when it had the chance? This company is too big for it’s own good.
Before Microsoft sets out to dominate another market, maybe they should pay attention to patching the one they’ve led to hypertrophy and destruction.

Look, if you’re a tech hobbyist, get Linux and you can tinker with it to your hearts content.

My MS Windows Mobile 2003 powered smartphone beats any Symbian offering I’ve seen to date. It integrates execellently with Outlook contacts, email, etc and Windows Media Player. I have also been writing software for it using the .NET compact framework. Life has never been so good.
Having seen microsoft step on the foot of other companies so often in the last few years, I have really started to hate them now! Recently it was the security business and now mobile phones. Hope Apple and Linux together would take microsoft down someday!
If Microsoft had an original idea it would die of loneliness. Too many people use Microsoft products because they purchase a PC with the OS installed and in order to read documents (Word and Excel) from business associates and customers they have little choice. But there is light at the end of the tunnel with Linux and Star Office we are beginning to see alternatives.

What a baloney! You work for Microsoft don’t you?
You are all too critical of Microsoft. I own a pocket pc / telephone with Windows on it and it has only crashed about 10 times in eight months, requiring a reboot. So they have a reset button; all you have to do is poke a little thing into the little hole, and bingo, it reboots and you are back in business. And it is exaggerated to say that there is a blue screen of death. Nothing of the kind. It just freezes, and no button, keystroke, mouse ploy will get it back (outside of the nifty reset button.) As for you linux fanatics, I have a linux server, and in the time I have had my phone, it hasn’t crashed once. Now that is boring.
I agree with Andrew - my SPV C500 is the best phone I have ever used. The Microsoft OS on there is fantastic. All these Linux and Mac fanboys are spouting rubbish - have they ever used an MS phone??
For goodness sake - I use OS X every day on my iBook and find it to be LESS stable than Windows XP. I haven’t seen a BSOD since Windows 98.
As for Linux - show me a robust X-shell that performs as well as Windows / OS X (and supports at least _some_ consumer hardware) — and THEN you can draw comparisons with Windows XP. Until then you are not comparing like for like.
Juan Xavier, when we purchase cell phones and their service, it’s understood that their product will function properly. Unfortunately Microsoft has brainwashed most to think it’s perfectly fine to use defective software. I agree with Bob Jones’ comment, Microsoft should focus on developing a solid operating system before allowing worms to enter the new realm of wireless telecommunication.
If you do use Windows, I suggest using Microsoft’s new AntiSpyware product. It’s able to find some bugs that Lavasoft’s AdAware doesn’t find.

Well actually David, I work for Microsoft, and really all I need is the guts of the phone. Were really impressed with the latest technology Nokia brings to the table, and plan to incorporate their design, into ours.
