Dell to enter low cost laptop market

Wall Street Journal has reported that Dell is collaborating with Compal Electronics to manufacture low cost laptops to challenge existing players in this growing market.

Asus showcased the potential of this market with their EEE PC. Hewlett Packard has also showcased their Mini-Note model which would soon be available for sale.

Dell is said to be targeting production of around 1-2 million units for initial launch.

This new range is likely to go on sale in all of the Dell’s international markets.

Wall Street Journal also quoted a Dell representative saying: “The bottom line is that we are going to enter the market with products that are smaller, lighter and address the more mobile users in a very cost-effective way.”

This new model is likely to have an 8.9-inch display and would cost between $400 and $500.
