Rumors: Italy could get unlocked Apple iPhone

Rome daily newspaper La Repubblica has said in a report that Apple has entered into a nonexclusive deal with Telecom Italia to offer their iPhone in the region.

This means that the iPhone could be sold unlocked in this market enabling the users to pick their own carriers and contracts.

The report said that the company has finally decided to sell the iPhone in a market without any accompanying contract.

Telecom Italia had this to say on this rumor: “We haven’t been commenting and I can’t tell you when we might be likely to do so.”

The deal rumored to be signed between the two companies is for a possible second generation 3G capable Apple iPhone.

Market analysts say that Apple is now aiming to expand the popularity of Apple Safari as a mobile browser through this initiative. This could help them get more users for Safari on the desktop platform.
