Microsoft starts replacement program for faulty Xbox Cables
As reported earlier, Microsoft has started the program where they are inviting users to bring their defective Xbox cables and get them replaced for free. This initiative is a result of problems reported by the customers of Xbox console who found that the cords could result in possible fire hazards.
Microsoft said that around 14 million Xbox consoles sold worldwide might be affected and they would be offering free replacements for it. In the United States, the recall affects one of every three cord models for Xbox consoles built before Oct. 23, 2003. In Europe, it affects devices built before Jan. 13, 2004.
The program is available from the official website of the Xbox (http://www.xbox.com). Microsoft has also made available a toll-free number for the same service (1-866-271-0450). The problems related to the cables supplied with the Xbox devices were reported by around 1,400 Xbox users though just about 20 cases were reported to smoking and fire incidents.
Microsoft expects the delivery timing of the new cables after the problem is lodged to be around two to four weeks. Until then, they advice the users to keep their consoles off and wait for the replacement.

Typical of Bill and crew.
Make a product, and once again it is defective. However, in this case
the cable can cause a house fire. I keep wondering how he stays in
business building products that are full of bugs and defects?

A recall can happen to any company. I cant seem to find any information on microsoft having any other recalls on stuff, let alone XboX. You WinHaters need to go find something else to hate. I dont see you hating car companys or hating some child toy manufactures because they have more recalls then I have seen on microsoft. Yes I dont care for windows, but I just dont use it and that is that. I dont sit at my computer wasting my time posting crap on boards all day. If fact, I think I have wasted enough time…

I haven’t found any problems with my box’s cable and I’ve had it since launch date. It’s a small margin of error, but it’s great that MS is replacing all cords. Now the only question is will Sony step up and help PS2 owners with their “6 months work and then refuse to work system” that involves much red tape from the SCEA CS and a lot of irate calls?

X-Box free exchange

So now, replacing defective goods is a “free service” generously “offered” by a company? What happened to the UCC (Universal Commercial Code) requirement that a seller provide commercially acceptable quality and merchandise fit for use? This is a great example of PR corporate fluff doublespeak – I haven’t seen car companies or toy manufacturers talking about recalls in such a self-inflating way.

Go here http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html check for recalls. Without Microsoft you would not be reading this and or be able to check for recalls for Toys. be grateful for what you have. Yhea MS has its moments we all do, are you perfect? Saftey for our Kids Toys and the Vehicles we drive has caused more issues than MS. Check for recalls at http://www.cpsc.gov/

Shirley, the U.C.C. also allows a seller to disclaim any warranties for the fitness of their merchandise. You see disclaimers all the time, and they’re valid.

What are you talking about?

Seems car manufacturers have a totally different scope to deal with. There are thousands of moving parts in a car hurtling 120kph/75mph down the road; one should expect the occasional recall. Childrens’ toys pose another interesting case. Standards are being updated all the time regarding what is “safe” for children, let alone the “if you want something taken apart, give it to a child” theory. No, Microsoft has defied logic and produced a product (in this case a wire) which is insufficient to carry the power demanded by the XBox. This is truly astounding. Of all the electrical gizmos we have all ever owned, how on earth to you excuse poor engineering/quality on something as basic as a power cord??? BTW: Is Microsoft going to refund the XBox Live subscription for the “two to four weeks” we have to wait? When is the world going to quit being held hostage by these morons? From MS marketing: “What do you want to do today?” response: “NOT burn to death because of Microsoft!”
February 19th, 2005 at 11:35 pm
I don’t think Microsoft made the wire. Also it advised to turn the Xbox off when NOT IN USE.

i dont really think this is such a big deal. i think its more likely to have the hard drive go bad or the power supply fail entirely than to have the power cord catch on fire. im on my third xbox now. i got a new cord for my last box from bestbuy for like 2$ but it turned out to be the powersupply that was bad. anyway, the point is they used a generic cable. same one as the ps2 and alot of other products in your home if you look. the only reason it can catch on fire is people leave their box on for days straight. its nice their taking credit for it. i just wish they took credit for some of the more expensive stuff like hard drive failures instead of a cheap power cable.

It’s bizarre to see people defend Microsoft in the way they are doing here. Two points:
Firstly, Mr Chester says “I don’t think Microsoft made the wire”. This is irrelevant. Microsoft designed the specifications, sourced out the manufacturing, and oversaw quality control. They are not somehow absolved of responsibility. They failed to quality assure the product.
Secondly, Kevin says “Without Microsoft you would not be reading this and or be able to check for recalls”. Without Microsoft, there would still be other companies creating office and web software. Microsoft did not invent the wheel, they just succeeded at managing contracts, marketing, acquiring, squashing, and monopolizing. Computing and the Internet predated MS and would have evolved with or without Mr. Gates. We might even have been better off if someone else had delivered more elegantly and ethically coded operating systems and software.

AT least they can admit they have a problem and offer a recall. Unlike Sony and their PS2’s which have many, many, many problems since almost day one and that continue upto this day. I fix both consoles as a part time job and my dead PS2 box is alot fuller than the dead XBox box. Even the newest mini PS2 have problems with the lasers frying on them. This is after 12 versions and they still can’t get the system right. They should have been recalling PS2’s along time ago. Version 9 and 10 ps2’s, don’t use a scratched disc in it, they can fry too. It goes on and on. But of course the Microsoft haters are going to use this as an excuse to say look, meanwhile I can tell you that ps2’s are way inferior to XBox in terms of robustness. As for 1,400 reported problems out of 14,000,000 thats a 0.01% failure rate. I don’t know how many ps2’s sony made but I have about 35-40 dead ones here alone, so I bet Sony’s percentage would be a lot higher.

its obvious that the negative feedback is from younger minds who have no idea what life was like before microsoft. because of great minds like bill gates, we have, (unfortunately for the rest of us, as far as having to tolerate the ignorant), more time available to pursue other areas of interest instead of the grinding, monotonuous, chore of punch card programing. I know there’s a bunch of you out there! hats off to bill gates & the great innovators of the planet like him . . . as a. einstein once said, “great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds”.

I’m glad to see MS steping up and doing this FREE OF CHARGE. I had to have my sony replaced. I have gone through 3 PS2 systems and when it came down to the 4th one breaking the same way i said this is enough, i called them and they said they would replave it free. I send it in, waited 3 months to get it back and they gave me a bill for 250 bucks because they said my system is modded, which it isn’t. I have gone to the MS website and as it looks my system doesn’t have to have the cord replaced, but it is nice to see them step up and admit they had a problem.

If you don’t like Microsoft Products, I suggest that you turn off your Computer and your X-Box and this won’t be a problem. For the person that said that there are thousands of moving parts in a car — that is true. There are. However, have you ever counted the number of resisters and components that are on a circuit card? Quit complaining about Microsoft. Do I like them? Not all of the time. But the fact of the matter is, you obviously like them — or you wouldn’t have bought the X-Box. There are simple choices that can be made in life. If you don’t like a music band — would you buy there CD? Probably not. Atleast the discrepancy has been found and a solution has been offered prior to YOUR HOUSE BURNING DOWN! Be thankful that it wasn’t your house!

OK i have sevarl replies to the posters. First is people giving gates credit for creating dos. He mearly bought and resold it to IBM. Second, a recall is always bad, they are replacing the cables to prevent frivlous and not so frivlous lawsuits, and thrid all the next gen consoles are crap quality, the problem people are having is that everyone is being dumbasses and covering the vents, or not cleaning them, also they are being transoprted now more then ever, and they are not ment to without packaging. Finally, the power cord problem is because of a recent outsourcing of electronics to 3rd world countries, sure it alows us to get our systems at a cheaper price, but is the drop in quality worth it. I personally dont.

I don’t know who Microsoft is trying to trick here but the problem isn’t with the power cables.. The problem is with the poopy power supplies used in the xbox. I have several xboxes. I am the least bit worried about the power cord, point is, if you don’t unplug it from the back constantly, it won’t mess it up, its a solder point problem and MS just blames it on the cord because they’re cheaper to replace..
Want to make me happy??
I’ll tell you what, send me 5 replacement lasers/dvd drives for my 5 boxes and I’ll call it even!
All of them turn on, no fire. They just can’t read anything..

The product was and XBOX game, which my boys loved, to no end. Untill the day the XBOX had a major fire. The public was never notified by mail of this problem. I am fighting
the company right know for my loses. They think iam going to go away, iam to old for that, their in for a fight. Could you imagine not having an adult home, when this fire happened i would have lost my home and family.I sent them the console ( or melted plastic) they looked at it and said it was a cigurate. Can you believe they sent the console back to the wrong address, and then DHL lost the
evidence to the case how convient. Their a huge company
but not so big the public cant speak up. Just think if this happened to you.And how they hide behind false results and their attornies.People speak up with the power of your words,as this will not end in tragedy or the death of a child god forbid…Shame on you XBOX

This message goes out all over the world. Whether its good or bad.I can speak the truth, and be heard,to all those people who had major problems with fires, and were turned away,by XBOX,and told the customer a bunch of lies. In this case iam 47 yrs old,I am in the elctronic field and I know a major melt down when i see it.Please dont stop your fight, if you were turned away like i was, keep the fight going.I have over 15,000 in damage which they refued to pay. They went as far a losing the melted console,as to not have it go to court,go figure I wish their was an attorney out their that had the guts to go against XBOX
on this case. Had i not be home the house would have burned to the ground. Lets not forget thier were children behing the controls deadly smoke and fire, lets hope this never happens to your family.I like games that are as close to real, but this was way serreal for me.I promise
XBOX i will get the world to here what a bunch of SOBs
your company is, and how currupt you are.Iam never giving up. If i can save one LIFE it will all have been worth it
