NASA releases information on next Space Shuttle Launch

In what would be a very crucial launch program for NASA with all of the world’s eye on them, they have announced the dates of the next shuttle mission. This would be the first one, ever since the Columbia accident, which happened two years ago. The dates were announced by the agency’s associate administrator for space operations. May 15 is the day when NASA would be launching the space shuttle into the space.

In a teleconference with the media, the representative from NASA said: “The challenge right now is closure of an awful lot of paper. The vehicle cannot launch until all the paperwork is done. I know that sounds a little bit trivial. But documentation of each and every thing we do is very important.”

Many recommendations were made by the board that investigated the fatal 2003 Columbia accident. Columbia disintegrated while coming back to earth with the investigations finding out that a piece of falling foam insulation from the external fuel tank during the launch was responsible for the incident.

NASA also set another date… July 12 for the second shuttle mission in the current year. They have also clarified that in case some complications happen on the Discovery flight, a rescue flight could be arranged as soon as June 14 for the rescue mission.

The space shuttle is an old and complicated vehicle using two propulsion technolgies as boosters. Each must work flawlessly every time time. The Rutan Spaceone is simple and far less costly. Maybe NASA could learn something. There is too much at stake with peoples lives on the line. The shuttle has provided invaluable information only limited by what scientific minds can devise in capturing the mysteries of space.
NASA should stop patching up the old and replace the shuttle with something less complicated.

    001 Comment about technology…
The space shuttle like any other space age technology
must be constantly evaluated and improved upon. Only then
can we be sure it can be safe enough to continue to use.
In my opinion it is possible to make space traval safer
and have it be a useful tool for the improvement of the human condition.
One such avenue would be to have escape pods much like our previous
saturn fives capsule sitting in the shuttle cargo bay and carry its
crew during launch and landings. I think useing older technology to its
fullest can get us where we must go much quicker than re-inventing the
wheel from scratch. This is just one example that I
have had and wondered why there hasn’t been any research to try
such a thing. If our governmet would spend some time and money
getting technologists together with the right types of grants
we probably never would have had the shuttle disasters of the
past. Safety can always be improved upon.
