European Union launches second Galileo satellite

The European Union has now launched the second satellite as part of their ambitious Galileo navigation system.

This system would become a potential challenger to the GPS system which is managed by USA.

EU said that this satellite was lifted into space by a Russian Soyuz rocket.

They would be using this satellite to test technologies to be used in the Galileo system.

Galileo is designed to be superior to GPS system in several ways. They had launched the first satellite for this project in 2005.

They plan to launch a total of 30 satellites and the system is expected to become operational by 2013.
