AMD demonstrates a working Dual-Core Athlon 64 Processor

Intel announced their range of 64-bit processors for desktop computers few days back. However, the days of relief already seems to be over as their prime competitor in the Microprocessor market, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices Inc.) has again showcased that they are running at a faster pace than the chip giant. In a latest development in the multicore technology, AMD said it has demonstrated a working model of a dual-core version of its Athlon 64 desktop processor.

News reports say that this chip runs at a clock-speed of 2.4 GHz and dissipates a maximum of 100W of power. An AMD representative told the media: “We’re in production. We will have availability in the second half of 2005–that’s when it will be in PCs on store shelves and in the hands of system builders.”

AMD built this chip at their new manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany. The chip is being built on a 90 nm semiconductor process. This just gives AMD an upper hand in the recently in news multicore processors development cycle. Both the companies committed to develop and release products in this segment in the current year.

Multicore chips are going to power the next generation of computing equipments. It places multiple CPUs on a single core of silicon. This gives the chip more computing power without increasing the power consumption and heat generation. Intel has plans to launch their series of multicore processors sometime during the next half of the current year. AMD on the other hand says that their chips are already under production and should be available in the market by the middle of the year.
