China wants a merger of China Unicom and China Netcom
China has announced that they would be issuing three licenses for 3G services.
The government further said that they now want a merger between China Unicom and China Netcom.
They are also going to ask China Telecom to acquire the CDMA network of China Unicom.
The aim is to overhaul the Chinese telecom industry as it enters the next phase.
With the launch of 3G services, Chinese mobile users would be able to access the web on mobile devices at faster speeds.
Sandy Shen, research director at Gartner IT spoke about these new developments: “The move aims to address China Mobile’s dominance and Unicom can finally focus on developing a single network, which will boost efficiency, and GSM is traditionally a stronger network.”
