Rhapsody renews its challenge for Apple iTunes
Rhapsody digital media store is renewing its challenge for the Apple iTunes digital music store.
The company is now launching a new marketing campaign through which they would offer their music through partners including Yahoo Inc and Verizon Wireless.
These songs are being offered in MP3 format which is compatible with Apple iPod range of media players.
The company has been focusing on the subscription model rather than selling the songs. The subscription model was not compatible with the Apple products which are the market leaders.
Rhapsody Vice President Neil Smith said in a statement: “We’re no longer competing with the iPod. We’re embracing it.”

About

They are only ‘embracing’ the iPod because the majors labels are colluding to let them, in an attempt to reduce the iTMS market share. This is not about growing the market, but selectively killing a specific distributor. They can’t get together and stop selling through the iTMS, as that would definitely appear anti-competitive AND cost them lots of money in lost sales. Instead, they are going for keeping iTMS crippled as much as possible with DRM, while letting the competition go DRM-free, yet keep the same or lower prices than the iTMS. If this process works, and iTMS’s market share is greatly reduced, you can then welcome DRM back, along with higher prices.
