Yahoo latest to ditch DRM Music customers
Yahoo has now become the latest seller of DRM music to ditch their customers.
The company has announced that they are closing down their DRM servers and the customers are advised to burn the music on Audio CDs to prevent any locking.
Yahoo has said that they would stop operating the servers on September 30 this year. These servers are required by the customers to reauthorize their music purchases when they reinstall their operating systems.
EFF staff attorney Corynne McSherry spoke about these new developments criticizing Yahoo: “This suggestion could put customers at legal risk, as they may not have documentation of purchase. Furthermore, there is no certainty that all relevant copyright owners would agree that making such backup copies without permission is lawful.”
Yahoo had announced earlier this year that they were closing down their Unlimited Music Store. They entered into a partnership with RealNetwork’s Rhapsody service.
Incidentally, Microsoft had done something similar earlier this year. Microsoft closing down their MSN Music license servers
