Gartner: USD 100 laptops years away
OLPC started their USD 100 project some years ago. They are yet to touch this target.
And research firm Gartner has now said that it would still take a couple of years before companies can actually come out with USD 100 laptops.
Gartner researcher Annette Jump quoted in the report: “The economic benefits of IT literacy in emerging markets are currently driving the push for the $100 PC, but there are many open questions that remain.”
The most important points raised in the report were: availability of power and internet connectivity.
Gartner said that we can see prices going down by 10% to 15% in the next two to three years due to declining costs of components but it would still be difficult for companies to sell these notebooks at around USD 100.
