Amazon improves position in music retail market in USA
Apple iTunes continues to remain the largest music seller in the US market.
Amazon has managed to climb one position to number 4 with some help from their own online media store Amazon MP3.
Wal-Mart is at the second spot and the retailing giant has failed to take back its top spot from Apple.
Best Buy is third and Target is fifth having lost their fourth spot to Amazon.
Russ Crupnick, NPD entertainment industry analyst spoke about their analysis: “Amazon’s CD buyers tend to be older, so they haven’t abandoned the CD format to the extent seen in the average music buyer. Plus Amazon’s successful introduction of its digital download store will help the company improve its position in the future.”
Amazon is now seen as the most potent challenger to Apple iTunes with a total DRM free store.

Yeah, but the ONLY reason for Amazon doing well is not because they are outmarketing Apple, but because the major music labels have Apple’s arm tied behind it’s back with DRM.
And the SOLE reason you (the consumer) are still paying $0.99 instead of $1.29 or $1.49 or $1.99 for songs is because Apple has the best music store and the best music player and the best integration between the two, so people still buy from Apple.
If Apple was also allowed to selling music from the major labels without DRM, Amazon and all the other online music stores would be crushed. Absolutely and completely.
