isoHunt sues Canadian Recording Industry Association over legality of torrent search
isoHunt is one of the largest BitTorrent file search engine on the web.
The people behind this web service have now filed a lawsuit against the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association).
They aim to find out the court’s point of view regarding the legality of torrent search engines.
isoHunt President Gary Fung wrote about their decision to sue the association: “This is one of the hardest decisions I had to make, to sue one of the most powerful lobby and corporate conglomerates in Canada. But for sake of continuing operation and development of isoHunt, this is something we must do. I don’t pretend to speak on behalf of all BitTorrent websites or users, but I speak to point out that with a lawsuit from CRIA hanging over our heads, we fight not just for our survival as an internet company of search engines and social networks, but also for other websites, from BitTorrent sites to larger search engines like Google, on which most of us have come to depend. The legal ramifications concerning search engines and linking here are far reaching.”
The logic is simple… isoHunt indexes torrent files just like Google indexes the web. If isoHunt links to any file which enables the user to download pirated digital media, Google practically can be accused of the same for linking to similar content from their search engine.
