Asterisk is to get Skype functionality
Asterisk is one of the most popular open source PBX platforms. The developers have now announced that the platform is all set to get Skype functionality.
They would soon be releasing a beta version of Skype For Asterisk which would be an add-on channel driver module.
This module would enable the users to use the Skype telephony technology to make calls.
The company said that this module would enable low-cost, global calling through such systems. No hardware change would be required.
Digium chief executive Danny Windham added: “Working together with Skype, our goal is to help businesses boost productivity and reap the rewards of feature-rich telephony software, all while saving a substantial amount of money. The Skype For Asterisk beta program is a first step toward adding Skype capabilities to Asterisk-based phone systems and enabling them to reach more than 338 million Skype users.”
