USB 3.0 spec finalized
USB Promoter Group has now released the finalized specifications for USB 3.0 standard.
They are now performing a “comprehensive review” of the technology at a conference in San Jose.
The group consists of leading tech companies in the world including Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and NEC.
USB Promoter Group said in a statement on their decisions: “The first SuperSpeed USB devices will likely include data storage devices such as flash (SSDs), external hard drives, digital music players, and digital cameras.”
Customers would however have to wait till 2010 to get their hands on first of these devices.
One of the most important feature of USB 3.0 is the enhanced speed. It would be 10 times faster than current standard USB 2.0.
The group gave an example on the enhanced speed which would be offered on USB 3.0 devices.
Transfer of a 25GB file:
USB 1.0: 9.3 hours
USB 2.0: 13.9 minutes
USB 3.0: 70 seconds
