Nvidia GeForce 9400M “Ion” graphics chipset for Netbooks announced
Nvidia has already captured Apple’s heart with their latest chipsets for mobile computers.
The company is now planning to capture the Netbooks market with the upcoming launch of GeForce 9400M “Ion” graphics chipset for Netbooks and small desktop designs.
Nvidia is hoping to capture the interests of Netbook manufacturers with this new chipset which they claim is much powerful compared to existing solutions.
Apple switched from Intel to Nvidia for a similar reason for their notebook models.
Most Netbooks available in the market today are powered with Intel chipset along with the Intel Atom processor.
Nvidia hopes to provide a better option for the Intel chipset in these products.
Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research spoke about this new development: “Nvidia does have superior graphics, and it’s a double annoyance for Intel. First, because Nvidia is in competition with (Intel), and second, because it will allow Netbook makers to build larger-screen Netbooks, which will encroach into the thin-and-light segment, and potentially cannibalize Intel’s bigger mobile CPUs.”
Nvidia added that they aim to bring full-fledged PC features to the Netbook. The chipset would brings features like DVI video, HDMI, and SATA to the Netbook.
