2008 year end to have one second extra
The current year 2008 would end a second late.
The world’s official timekeepers have announced that a “leap second” would be added to the last day of the year.
This would help matching the clocks to the Earth’s slowing spin on its axis.
This extra second would be added to the clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time.
The decision to add this extra second has been taken by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service.
The first such second was added to clocks around the world on June 30, 1972.
