Microsoft: Leap year caused Zune problems
Microsoft might be the largest software company in the world but they are still making small mistakes which cause tons of misery to their customers.
The company’s Zune player has failed to challenge the domination of the Apple iPod in the market.
And the latest Zune problems are not helping the cause.
A lot of people noticed that their Zune players stopped working yesterday. It just hang on the loading screen.
Microsoft has now reported that the problem is caused by the leap year 2008.
The bug lies in the device’s internal clock driver.
A company representative added that only the 30GB edition of the Zune is affected by this bug.
Microsoft added that the devices should start working fine on January 1 with the start of the new year.
The company is further advising the owners of problematic devices to let the battery drain before starting the device again.

I don’t understand why having the wrong date would cause the unit to fail like that. Why wouldn’t it just show the wrong date? And really, how does it even *know* it’s the wrong date, if there’s a bug. I would think it would simply assume it was January 1, 2009, a day early.
Could it have something to do with DRM causing the problems?
