OLPC Project in trouble? Job cuts announced

One Laptop Per Child Foundation has announced that they are cutting some jobs in the operations which are aimed at providing cheap computing solutions to school going kids in developing nations.

OLPC’s Nicholas Negroponte said in a statement that they are cutting half its staff, or about 30 jobs.

They are also cutting the salaries of the rest of the remaining staff as the economic conditions are hurting the project badly.

Negroponte spoke about these new developments: “Like many other nonprofits that are facing tough economic times, One Laptop per Child must downsize in order to keep costs in line with fewer financial resources.”

This is bad news for the OLPC project which has already seen competition from giants like Intel and the emergence of netbooks in the market.
