FT-EV: Toyota confirms plan to launch an electric car in USA

Japanese automaker Toyota has announced that they would indeed launch an electric car in the US market.

The company aims to have this new model on sale by 2012.

Toyota would be showcasing a concept vehicle at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

This new model would be an ultra-compact battery-powered concept car.

This model has been named Toyota FT-EV and it is based on their ultra-compact iQ model which is already on sale in the Japanese market.

Irv Miller, vice president of Toyota Motor Sales USA spoke about the market scenario: “Last summer’s $4-a-gallon gasoline was no anomaly. It was a brief glimpse of our future. We must address the inevitability of peak oil by developing vehicles powered by alternatives to liquid-oil fuel.”
