NTT DoCoMo to close down 2G networks in three years time

While, most countries are yet to get 3G networks for the mobile users, Japan is fast moving on to future generation technologies.

Japanese telecom giant NTT DoCoMo has announced that they would switch off its second-generation cell phone network in just over three years.

They were the first telecom company in the world to launch their commercial 3G service. The launch took place in Tokyo way back in 2001.

They are also not offering 2G phones any more. The last 2G phone was launched in 2004. 3G customers are several times the 2G users on their networks.

NTT said that they would make lucrative offers to surviving 2G customers to move to new technologies when they close down the 2G network in 2012.
