Mobile sales went down significantly in last quarter of 2008
Market research firm IDC has reported that the sales of mobile phones went down 12.6 percent to 289 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The report by IDC said that mobile phone vendors shipped a total of 1.18 billion units worldwide last year.
This is a slight improvement of 3.5 percent over 1.14 billion units that were shipped in 2007.
Ramon Llamas, a senior research analyst with IDC had this to say on the developments in this market: “The fourth quarter was the perfect storm of factors to produce this result. A combination of weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and limited credit availability prevented the market from experiencing the usual seasonal increase in shipments.”
Nokia remains the market leader with around 39.7 percent market share. Samsung is second with 16.7 percent. LG has caught up with Motorola with 8.5 percent share of the market. Sony Ericsson accounts for 8.2 percent market share.
