Google Book Search now optimized for mobile devices

Google has launched a mobile device friendly version of their Book Search service.

The company is using Optical Character Recognition to make available screen-friendly text from scanned page images from about 1.5 million public domain books.

All these are now available on a mobile device that can access the web!

This web based service practically enables the smartphones like Apple iPhone and Google G1 to act as ebook readers!

Google admits that the OCR process is not really perfect and users are going to end up getting smudges and other imperfections in the text.

The company said in a blog post: “The technical challenges are daunting, but we’ll continue to make enhancements to our OCR and book structure extraction technologies. With this launch, we believe that we’ve taken an important step toward more universal access to books.”
