Mobile phones to feature common charging interface by 2012

Mobile industry group GSMA has announced that the major mobile phone manufacturers are collaborating to ensure that all new mobile phones would have a common charging interface by 2012.
Nokia, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are part of this group along with mobile service providers AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
They have decided to use micro USB interface which is already very popular for data transfer between the computer and portable devices.
GSMA said that the companies eventually would stop supplying the phones with the chargers because these would become a common item in all houses in the coming years. This would result in less waste.
Apple incidentally is missing from the list. The company is one of the largest smartphone seller in the US market with the iPhone. They use a proprietary cable for charging and syncing the device.
